{"id":42,"date":"2006-07-27T19:50:45","date_gmt":"2006-07-28T03:50:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jaredrobinson.com\/blog\/?p=42"},"modified":"2006-07-27T19:50:45","modified_gmt":"2006-07-28T03:50:45","slug":"principles-of-reputation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jaredrobinson.com\/blog\/principles-of-reputation\/","title":{"rendered":"Principles of Reputation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nOne of my past professors, Phil Windley, posted some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.windley.com\/archives\/2006\/06\/principles_of_r.shtml\">principles of reputation<\/a>:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Reputation is one of the factors upon which trust is based<\/em>\n<li><em>Reputation is someone else&#8217;s story about me<\/em> &#8211; this means that I can&#8217;t control what you say about me although I may be able to affect the factors you based your story on. Also, every person should be able to have their own story about me.\n<li><em>Reputation exists in the context of community<\/em> &#8211; this is different than saying &#8220;communities have a reputation about someone.&#8221;\n<li><em>Reputation is based on identity<\/em> &#8211; reputation, as someone else&#8217;s story, isn&#8217;t part of your identity, but is based on an identity or set of identities.\n<li><em>Reputation is a currency<\/em> &#8211; while you can&#8217;t change it, reputation can be used as a resource. Paul Resnick has a paper showing the value of a positive eBay reputation.\n<li><em>Reputation is narrative<\/em> &#8211; you have to apply metaphor to interpret, reputation is dynamic becase the factors that affect it are always changing, reputation may require weaving together of plot lines.\n<li><em>Reputation is based on claims (verified or not), transactions, ratings, and endorsements.<\/em> &#8211; this brings up the issue of evidence, recourse for slander or mistakes, etc.\n<li><em>Reputation is muti-level<\/em> &#8211; a reputation isn&#8217;t just based on facts, but is also based on other&#8217;s beliefs about the target of that reputation.
