{"id":17,"date":"2006-04-03T19:52:47","date_gmt":"2006-04-04T03:52:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jaredrobinson.com\/blog\/?p=17"},"modified":"2006-04-03T19:52:47","modified_gmt":"2006-04-04T03:52:47","slug":"advantages-of-fedora-core-5-over-fc3fc4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jaredrobinson.com\/blog\/advantages-of-fedora-core-5-over-fc3fc4\/","title":{"rendered":"Advantages of Fedora Core 5 over FC3\/FC4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nAdvantages of Fedora Core 5 over FC3\/FC4:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Faster boot times<\/li>\n<li>Faster Gnome desktop login<\/li>\n<li>Faster responsiveness in the Gnome user interface (snappier application menu, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Suspend to disk and suspend to RAM<\/li>\n<li>New desktop applications: Beagle desktop search tool, F-spot photo manager, Tomboy note taking application.<\/li>\n<li>Firefox: Opening a new window is MUCH faster than with FC4.<\/li>\n<li>Most stable installer to date, in my opinion.<\/li>\n<li>New HAL integration (hardware abstraction layer) manages USB flash drives, and as a result, they mount on the user&#8217;s desktop more quickly than in the past.<\/li>\n<li>SELinux targetted policies are much more comprehensive<\/li>\n<li>Better wireless NIC support.<\/li>\n<li>Xen virtulization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nI find it easier to upgrade rather than reinstall. The upgrade process did not install the new applications that a fresh install would have provided. Therefore, I did a fresh install of FC5 on one machine, and grabbed the package list (<a id=\"p18\" onmousedown=\"selectLink(18);\" href=\"http:\/\/jaredrobinson.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/04\/FC5-install-package-list.txt.gz\">FC5 Packages<\/a>). Then, I upgraded another machine, grabbed the package list (<tt>\"rpm -qa | sort > upgradepackages.txt<\/tt>&#8220;). I generated a &#8216;diff&#8217; of the two files.
