{"id":1053,"date":"2015-05-11T09:34:45","date_gmt":"2015-05-11T15:34:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jaredrobinson.com\/blog\/?p=1053"},"modified":"2015-05-16T22:01:21","modified_gmt":"2015-05-17T04:01:21","slug":"openwest-notes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jaredrobinson.com\/blog\/openwest-notes\/","title":{"rendered":"OpenWest notes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This past weekend, I attended the excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openwest.org\/\">#OpenWest conference<\/a>, and I presented <a href=\"http:\/\/jaredrobinson.com\/Scaling_RabbitMQ\">Scaling RabbitMQ<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The volunteers that organized the\u00a0conference deserve a huge amount of thanks. I can\u2019t imagine how much work it was. I should also thank the conference <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openwest.org\/our-sponsors\/\">sponsors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/thetransistor.com\/\">local group of hardware engineers<\/a> designed an <a href=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/CEa0hheUsAAiSQc.jpg\">amazing conference badge<\/a>, built from a circuit board. They deserve a big &#8220;high-five&#8221;. There was a soldering lab where I soldered surface mount components for the first time in my life \u2013 holding the components in place with tweezers. I bought the add-on kit for $35 that included a color LCD\u00a0screen and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parallax_Propeller\">Parallax Propeller chip<\/a>. It took me 45 minutes to do the base kit, and two hours to do the add-on kit. I breathed a sigh of relief when I turned on the power, and it all worked.<\/p>\n<p>The speakers did a great job, and I appreciate the hours\u00a0they spent preparing. I wish I could have attended more of the sessions.<\/p>\n<p>Among others, I attended sessions on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C%2B%2B11\">C++11<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rust_%28programming_language%29\">Rust<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/golang.org\/\">Go lang<\/a>, Erlang, MongoDB schema design, .NET core, wireless security, <a href=\"http:\/\/saltstack.com\/community\/\">Salt Stack<\/a>, and digital privacy.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to keep my eye on Rust, want to learn and use Go, and\u00a0use the new <a href=\"http:\/\/docs.saltstack.com\/en\/latest\/topics\/beacons\/\">beacon<\/a> feature of\u00a0Salt Stack.\u00a0Sometime in the future, I&#8217;d like\u00a0to use the new features of C++11.<\/p>\n<p>The conference was an excellent place to have useful side-conversations with vendors, speakers, and past colleagues.
